Children with atopic dermatitis or eczema, tend to have very dry skin in general. This happens because atopic dermatitis or eczema causes defects in the skin barrier which makes the skin “leaky”. The skin barrier or also called as the “epidermis” is upper most layer of skin that protects it from irritants, microbes like bacteria/viruses, and allergens. The epidermis also prevents moisture from getting out of the skin.
What is Soak and Seal Technique?
The “Soak and Seal” method of treating atopic dermatitis or eczema prevents and reduce the symptoms by putting water back into the skin.
How is a Soak and Seal Technique done for children with atopic dermatitis or eczema?
Soak and Seal Technique involves two steps:
Step 1: Soak
- Make your baby bathe in luke warm (not hot) water for around 8-10 minutes. Soaking in a tub of lukewarm water helps your child’s skin to absorb moisture better
- Add bath oil
- Use a with a very mild soap or a non-soap cleanser.
- Avoid scrubbing the affected skin with a washcloth or loofah.
- After bath, gently pat skin dry to keep it moist or slightly wet.
- Avoid rubbing the skin
- In case of a bad atopic dermatitis or eczema soak and seal can be done twice a day
Step 2: Seal
- Apply moisturizer right away (within three minutes) on the wet skin to retain the moisture in children with atopic dermatitis or eczema.
- Apply moisturizer liberally all over the body.
- Bathing and moisturizing can be scheduled at night, just before bed in older children with atopic dermatitis or eczema. This can help skin retain moisture better.
