Ultrasound Guided Chest Procedures

The ultrasound is a very useful modality to guide various chest procedures. It makes the procedures more precise, safe and provides a better sample. Ultrasound uses high frequency sound waves which reflect back off the tissues inside the chest to make an image of the chest on the screen. The image acquired in the ultrasound helps to guide various chest procedures.  This section deals with common Ultrasound Guided Chest Procedures performed in children like Pleural Fluid Aspiration (Thoracocentesis), Pleural biopsy, Lung Biopsy and Biopsy of Chest Masses.

Ultrasound Guided Pleural Fluid Aspiration (Thoracocentesis)

Pleural aspiration, also called as thoracocentesis is a procedure whereby pleural fluid or air may be aspirated via a system inserted temporarily into the pleural space. This may be for diagnostic purposes (usually removing 20–50 ml fluid) or therapeutic to relieve symptoms. It also helps in guiding placement of a chest tube.

Ultrasound Guided Pleural biopsy

Pleura is the membrane which surrounds the lungs and inside of the chest. Sometimes a small piece of the pleura is required to be taken for diagnosis of pleural effusion (fluid inside the chest). It helps to determine if infection (like tuberculosis), cancer, or another condition is present. This procedure is called Pleural Biopsy.

Ultrasound Guided Lung Biopsy

Ultrasound-guided lung biopsy is a minimally invasive procedure used to obtain tissue samples from lung lesions for diagnostic purposes. An ultrasound-guided lung biopsy involves Ultrasound to visualize lung abnormalities and guide the insertion of a biopsy needle into the targeted area and collect multiple small pieces of tissue. Real-time imaging allows for precise needle placement and reduces the risk of complications compared to open surgical biopsies. Since this avoids radiation this procedure is quite useful for children.

Ultrasound Guided Biopsy of Chest Masses

Ultrasound-guided biopsy of chest masses is a minimally invasive procedure used to obtain tissue samples from abnormalities in the chest region for diagnostic purposes. Lung or mediastinal masses can be approached and biopsy taken for diagnostic purposes.

Ultrasound Guided Chest Procedures at BLK MAX Hospital
