Atopic Dermatitis or Eczema and Bathing!

Regular bathing is important for children with atopic dermatitis or eczema. Regular bathing removes dirt, irritants and allergens. Set up a good skin care routine for your baby that includes daily bathing and moisturizing. This helps in managing atopic dermatitis or eczema symptoms and prevents flares up’s.

How to bathe a child with atopic dermatitis or eczema?

  • Make your baby bathe in luke warm (not hot)  water.
  • Take at least one bath or shower a day
  • Bathing time should be around five to ten minutes.
  • Avoid scrubbing the affected skin with a washcloth or loofah.
  • During severe flares, limit the use of soaps and cleansers to avoid irritation


Is a shower or bath is better for children with atopic dermatitis or eczema?
Both bathing and showering are equally effective in keeping the skin barrier healthy in children with atopic dermatitis or eczema. Any can be done as per personal preference. The rest of the rules although remain the same.

What type of soap and shampoo should be used for children with atopic dermatitis or eczema?
Children with atopic dermatitis or eczema have a very dry skin. This is because the skin in children with atopic dermatitis or eczema isn’t doing a very good job of retaining its moisture (water). Remember harsh soaps and too much washing can lead to a very dry skin, which can irritate your child’s atopic dermatitis or eczema and can even make it worse.

For children with atopic dermatitis or eczema use a with a very mild soap or a non-soap cleanser. Products which are unscented, fragrance-free and dye-free should be used for children with children with atopic dermatitis or eczema to avoid further irritation.

Are bath oils helpful for children with atopic dermatitis or eczema?
Gentle bath oils are helpful to keep the skin moisturized in children with atopic dermatitis or eczema. The oils should not contain fragrances that could further irritate the skin.

What should be done after the child has been bathed?

  • After bath, gently pat skin dry to keep it moist or slightly wet.
  • Avoid rubbing the skin
  • Apply moisturizer right away on the wet skin to retain the moisture. This is called ‘Soak and Seal Technique’.
  • Apply moisturizer liberally all over the body.
  • Bathing and moisturizing can be scheduled at night, just before bed in older children. This can help skin  retain moisture better

Are there any special baths for children with atopic dermatitis or eczema?
Bleach bath, oatmeal baths and sometimes adding vinegar has been helpful in reducing recurrent skin infections.
